Chapter Twenty

NOAH WALKED TO THE CHURCH Tuesday morning unaccustomed to the quiet. For the past few months he’d been surrounded by Lily and Hannah and their unending chatter in the mornings. As many times as he’d joked about needing silence and being unable to hear himself think, now that he finally had that quiet, he didn’t know what to do with it. Echoes of their laughter followed him, carried by the breeze, so close he was sure that if he turned his head they’d be there.

But they weren’t. Lily was a married woman and Hannah . . . he hadn’t seen or heard from her since Sunday. She’d left the church so quickly he thought she had a hot date lined up. Would she have told him if she did? He shook the thought away, not liking where that train of thought would end. His feelings for Hannah were a puzzle he hadn’t figured out.

His dad left the house early that morning, heading back to one of the church plants he was helping in the area, leaving Noah in charge of the Mission. As he unlocked the gates and slid the heavy metal fence open, out of habit, he glanced back, expecting to see Hannah behind him, sliding into the driver’s seat, ready to drive the truck in, but he was alone, the street and the sidewalk empty and deserted.

Walking through the halls, flipping on the lights, and getting the coffee started was a lonely task. He’d done it thousands of times before, but he’d grown accustomed to Hannah’s presence, the routine they shared, the familiarity of her presence.

The little coffee pot on the table in the corner was just starting to percolate when he heard a car pull into the parking lot. He smiled as he looked at the clock. Of course Hannah would still be on time. He wondered how early she had left the house in the Hills to make it to the church at exactly nine a.m.

When she came into the office, he was pouring her the first cup of coffee. After adding two of the flavored creamers she liked, he offered it to her. “Right on time,” he said as she dropped her purse onto their shared desk.

“Barely.” She took the mug he held out and sipped it, sighing with contentment as the caffeine hit her system. “I thought I was going to be late. Traffic was crazy.”

“It’s LA. Traffic is always crazy,” he replied and poured himself a cup, skipping the fancy creamer and drinking it black.

“Ben’s house is amazing, but the commute is a killer.” Sinking into her chair, she started up the laptop and waited for it to come to life.

“Maybe we should switch,” he said, thinking a few days in the lap of luxury might be fun.

She didn’t laugh like he thought she would. She stared at the computer screen as it slowly changed from black to gray to a photo of the ocean. “I’m sure Kate would prefer having you for a roommate instead of me.
